How to deep clean make-up brushes

We all know how important it is to wash our face but do we all know the importance of deep cleaning our brushes? If we don't clean our brushes, bacteria builds up and then we end up spreading it all over our faces , resulting in more breakouts and clogged up skin.

I know it can take ages to clean brushes but it's really important to stop the spread of bacteria. I clean mine once a week, normally on Sunday's, and if I need to I spot clean them in between the weekly wash.

Here is a picture demo of how I deep clean my brushes.

You will need a baby shampoo or mild shampoo, this won't be too harsh on the bristles. And of course you need your brushes!

Step 1: Facing the brush down towards the basin of the sink, gently soak it until it's wet.

Step 2: Grab the shampoo and put a small amount in the palm of your hand (this is my boyfriends hand, I don't have hairy manly arms, aha).

Step 3: Grab your brush and dip it in the shampoo.

Step 4: Swirl your brush around in the shampoo until all of the make-up comes off. For a better scrub use the ridges of your fingers together (as seen in the picture below).

Step 5: Make sure that your brush is clean, it should be the same colour as what it was when you bought it.

Step 6: Rinse your brush underneath the tap, make sure you do not soak it all under the tap or dunk it under the water. If water gets into the handle (where the bristles meet the handle) the bristles can fall out and this is very damaging to your brush.

Step 7: Squeeze all the excess water out. If you're going to wash other brushes lay the one that you've just washed flat on the surface. This will prevent water from going down the brush into the glue that holds the bristles in place.

Step 8: Lay a towel on a flat surface, put your brushes on the towel flat and if you can hang the bristles over the edge. I've laid mine on my desk. This will help them dry faster.

I usually wash my brushes at night and leave them until the morning and they're always completely dry, ready for use! Make sure you wash your brushes every week or so to prevent bacteria build up.
